About John Simmons, ASC
Emmy Award winning cinematographer and photographer John Simmons, ASC, came of age in Chicago during the socially and politically turbulent era of the 1960s. His decision to become a photographer can be traced to the time spent with his mentor, Bobby Sengstacke, a renowned photographer for the Chicago Defender newspaper.
Since the 1960s, Simmons has produced captivating photographs that present the beauty, complexities, challenges, and intimate moments of black life and the broader world around him.
NO CRYSTAL STAIR: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF JOHN SIMMONS on view at The Museum of African American Art until March 29, 2020, features images selected from Simmons' vast archive of photographs from the 1960s and 1970s and highlights the enduring profoundness of Simmons' early works.
