our mission

MAAA was established as a nonprofit cultural and educational institution dedicated to the interpretation, promotion, and preservation of art by or about people of African descent and their contribution to world culture.

The museum has become a venue for exploring intercultural realities portrayed in the works of artists in the Los Angeles area and beyond. MAAA strives to present exhibits in which art and artists inspire public discourse about issues that reflect, illuminate, or intersect with the experiences of people in the African diaspora.

“Generally speaking, the work is never done.”
—Dr. Samella Lewis

This statement by the museum's founder poignantly captures not only artists' feelings about their own creative works but also the ongoing work of museums like MAAA, whose missions are dynamic and constantly evolving to meet the needs of their constituents.

MAAA proudly serves as a first-exhibit venue for emerging artists, a community event space, and an arts-education field trip destination for students from local public schools.
