FAQ | california african american museum (caam)

Is MAAA related to the California African American Museum?

No, MAAA is not a part of CAAM. The Museum of African American Art (MAAA) is a small nonprofit 501(c)(3) public benefit organization funded by individual and corporate donors, while the California African American Museum (CAAM) is funded and operated by the State of California (see www.caam.ca.gov or www.caamuseum.org).

In addition, since its founding in 1975, the mission of MAAA has focused specifically on African American art, while CAAM explores African American history and culture.

Los Angeles is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world and home to countless museums that inform our ideas about the world and the people in it.

We believe there is a need for diversity of organizations - including independent nonprofits like MAAA - in our city's kaleidoscope of arts and culture.
